TOPEKA | A political action committee led by Gov. Kathleen Sebelius is bankrolling mailings and radio advertising for Democratic legislative candidates.
Sebelius is chairwoman of the Bluestem Fund. In recent months, it spent $323,000 on mailings and radio ads for candidates in 19 races.
That information was in a campaign finance report the fund filed with the secretary of state's office. The report also disclosed $15,000 in direct contributions to nearly all the Democrats running against Republican legislative incumbents this year.
Such PACs can accept an unlimited amount of money from donors. They also can spend whatever they want to help a candidate, if they don't coordinate their activities with that candidate.
