Northland commuters heading south across the Paseo Bridge this morning into downtown are urged to try another route.
The state highway department reported significant delays yesterday morning after the southbound lanes of Interstate 29/35 were shifted to the east between Front Street and Independence Avenue.
Highway officials said traffic backed up across the Missouri River from the northeast corner of the downtown freeway loop to north of the I-29/35 split. One driver complained of being 35 minutes late because of traffic.
The backups occurred because the lane shift shortened the on-ramp from Front Street to the interstate and reduced the number of southbound through lanes from three to two in that area.

The lane configurations in that area will remain in place until the fall of 2009 so commuters are urged to try either the Broadway or Heart of America bridges.
Highway officials still urge anyone who doesn’t have business in the corridor to avoid it if at all possible, especially with work starting to accelerate.
