The 2008 Heartland Combined Federal Campaign kicked off Wednesday morning at Illus Davis Park, 10th and Oak streets.
The rally, which continues until 1 p.m., includes food, games, prizes and entertainment. Also, 65 charitable agencies will be there with information for donors.
Last year, the campaign raised $3.5 million.
Campaign media chair Jackie Beard said leaders hope to raise the same amount this year, even with the bad economy.

“We are optimistic that maybe we can exceed last year’s goal,” Beard said.
The campaign continues through Nov. 12.
Heartland Combined Federal Campaign pledges are made to specific charities, although the campaign total is included in the community goal of the United Way of Greater Kansas City. The area United Way goal this year is $40.5 million.
