LAWRENCE | Kansas wide receiver Dexton Fields will not play against Louisiana Tech on Saturday, KU coach Mark Mangino said after Wednesday’s practice.
Fields, a senior starter at the position, looked to hurt his left foot or ankle late in the first quarter against Florida International. Mangino said he didn’t know whether Fields would be ready to play against South Florida on Sept. 12.
“That’s what we’re hoping,” Mangino said. “I can tell you that there’s no fracture, but he is in no way ready to play this Saturday for sure.”
Mangino said that true freshman Daymond Patterson, who dazzled during his first college game with four punt returns for 135 yards and a touchdown and made several impressive catches, would take Fields’ place on the depth chart.
Hatch looking good
Mangino said that redshirt freshman right tackle Jeremiah Hatch, who missed the first game with an undisclosed injury, is progressing well in practice this week.
“We feel good about what we see,” Mangino said. “There hasn’t been a whole lot of after-effects from post-practice. We’ll work him through (Thursday’s) practice and if he looks sharp and he’s pain free, we’ll start him.”
