Weekend lane closures to affect Kansas highways

They’re not shutting down all the highways in Kansas this weekend, but it will sure seem like it.

Driving will be tough on I-35, I-70 and on U.S. 24/40 throughout the weekend. So prepare a detour now or be prepared to wait.

Here’s what to look for on Kansas roads this weekend:• Interstate 35 will be down to one lane in both directions all weekend between 95th and 119th street on the Olathe-Lenexa border. The closures start at 7 tonight and run through 5 a.m. Monday. Expect lengthy delays. Also, the ramps from northbound I- 35 to Interstate I-435 and from I-435 to northbound I-35 will be closed all weekend, too.

• Farther north, I-35 will be reduced to one lane in both directions from Antioch Road to Southwest Boulevard. The work runs from 7:30 tonight to 5 a.m. Monday. This project has been ongoing all summer and can cause extensive traffic backups.

• Drivers will not be able to get from Southwest Boulevard to southbound I-35 in Wyandotte County all weekend because of pavement patching. The ramp will close from 7:30 tonight to 5:30 a.m. Monday.

• U.S. 24/40, otherwise known as State Avenue, will close from 141st Street to 130th Street in Wyandotte County so workers can demolish a bridge on Kansas 7 where a new interchange will be built. The road will be closed from 8 p.m. today to 9 a.m. Saturday. The road will close at the same times overnight Saturday if more work is needed.

• Access between Interstate 70 and 18th Street in Wyandotte County will be limited most of Saturday. The ramps between westbound I-70 and 18th Street will close from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. The ramps between eastbound I-70 and 18th Street will close from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
