Commuters from northwest Cass County will lose an important north-south highway starting this morning — if Mother Nature allows.
Route D, otherwise known as Holmes Road, will be shut down from Missouri 58 to the entrance of the Loch Lloyd Country Club starting at 8 a.m. That section of the highway will be closed until Aug. 18.
While the highway will be off-limits between Missouri 150 and Route 58, it still will be open to some local traffic, officials said. Motorists will only be able to access Loch Lloyd from the north until Aug. 18, officials said.
The construction is the first of three phases of a $3.7 million project to rebuild the highway, which has deteriorated partly because of soft limestone that has worn out over the years.
Other sections of the road will be closed as construction progresses. The road is expected to be completely open to all traffic by the end of September and all construction should be concluded by mid-October, weather permitting.
Northbound drivers are urged to avoid the detour by taking Route 58 to the east and U.S. 71 north and back west on Highway 150 to Route D. You can reverse the directions if you’re headed south from Kansas City.
