Shoplifting arrest leads to federal firearm charge

An area man faces a federal court detention hearing Monday after being charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Independence police arrested Robert M. Huss, 53, on Tuesday for allegedly shoplifting a package of batteries after a hardware store employee saw him leave the store without paying.

While being held at the store, Huss began squirming in a chair and a Colt .38-caliber revolver dropped to the floor, according to federal court records.

Huss has prior convictions for possession of a controlled substance in Clay and Platte counties, according to court documents.
