Security guard prevents armed robbery at gas station

The presence of a security guard thwarted an armed robbery early today at a Shell gas station.

The failed heist occurred about 1:10 a.m. in the 5500 block of Bannister Road.

It began when three men walked up to the store's front doors and the first man stepped in with a gun. He yelled "Break bread!" as a way of demanding cash. The other two men had not yet walked into the store.

At that moment, a security guard stepped around a corner in the back of the store.

"Security!" one of the robbers yelled. The robbers then backed up and ran away. One of them fired one or two shots at the store as they fled, breaking a large window at the front of the store.

No one was hurt. There were several customers and 6 employees inside the store.
