What it is: A dog collar with a retractable leash built into it.
How it works: With a turn of a button, a rubber handle is released. It's attached to a 3-foot cable that unwinds from inside the collar.
The good: Anyone with a dog knows what a hassle a leash can be. First you have to find the thing. Then you have to attach it to the collar of a frenzied, spinning dog. And then you and the dog invariably get entangled in it. The Supercollar eliminates all those negatives; it's a welcome addition to your travel gear. A quick flick of the button lets the 36-inch steel cables unwind. And they are strong, able to withstand 100 pounds of pull. The waterproof collar also has a stainless steel loop in case you decide to use a traditional leash — but why would you? —or wish to attach ID tags. And for nighttime walking, it has reflective tape on it.
The bad: The retractable cable can be dangerous, which the manufacturer clearly points out. Don't let it run across your skin or wrap around fingers or the pet's paws. Just never touch it. Also, the collar comes in two sizes: medium (for13- to 17-inch necks) and large (16-22 inch), and is designed for dogs weighing 20 to 90 pounds. We might suggest a version for smaller dogs as well.
