To encourage people to adopt cats, the Kansas Humane Society is offering a reduced adoption fee of $17.76 for all kittens and waiving the adoption fee for adult cats during "Cat Independence Days" today and Sunday. The shelter is also offering 20 percent off standard dog adoption fees.

PawCasso fundraiser to help dog rescues
Wyldewood Cellars in Peck will host PawCasso, a fundraiser to benefit Big Dogs Huge Paws and Rockin' Paw Rescue & Adoption Network, from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
The afternoon will feature a wine tasting and art auction, with many other items donated to help the groups raise money to cover medical expenses for the dogs in their care. Tickets are $25 per person or $40 for a couple.

Holistic dog food topic of meeting Thursday
The Kansas Toy Dog Club will hold a discussion at 7 p.m. Thursday on the benefits of holistic dog food. The speaker will be Jim Halsig from Bed & Biscuit Pet Center, a professional dog groomer.
The meeting, which is open to the public, is at the FlightSafety Building at Webb and Central. Park in the underground garage and use the east door.
Bark for Life cancer fundraiser is July 24
The American Cancer Society will hold a Bark for Life fundraiser from 10 a.m. until noon July 24 at Riverside Park. Registration is $25 per dog.
Dog owners can start a team, join a team or register as an individual. Anyone can make a donation to the American Cancer Society as well. There will be goodies for the dogs, contests, demonstrations by K-9 units and more.
