Wet weather is to blame for a delay in the opening of Wichita's first off-leash dog park.
The city had hoped to open part of Chapin Park, at Hydraulic and MacArthur, to dogs and their owners in October, said Larry Hoetmer, landscape architect for the park department.
But the fencing, which is key to the dog park, has not yet been installed because it's too muddy for trucks to get in without damaging the site, Hoetmer said.
He hopes the fencing will be installed within two weeks and the park will be open to canine visitors by the end of the year.
The city plans to hold a grand opening of the dog park in spring, Hoetmer said.
"There's been so much interest in the dog park from a lot of folks around the city," he said.
"We're counting on Mother Nature to really get us all finished up in the spring and get some grass growing."
