The Extension Master Gardener Hotline takes questions about gardening from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. weekdays at 316-660-0190. Here are a couple of questions addressed this week.
What are the small larvae and beetles feeding on emerging asparagus?
These are asparagus beetles, both larvae and adults. They can be a nuisance and make the spears unappealing. Treat with pyrethrin, rotenone, permethrin or sevin. Follow waiting periods listed on the label before consuming the asparagus.
What is the white powdery stuff on fescue lawns?
This is the fungus called powdery mildew. It is actually on bluegrass that is often blended into tall-fescue lawns. A couple of treatments of fungicide containing one of the following active ingredients will stop the spread: triademefon, myclobutanil or propiconazole. Treat now and repeat in two weeks.
