Tasks: Picked our first harvest: a dozen heads of transplanted lettuce and the largest leaves of the leaf radish in the Asian garden. Thinned mustard and lettuce seedlings and added the tiny leaves to the salad mix. Planted purple and yellow snap beans and green Italian flat beans, as well as a couple of hyacinth beans on lattices.
Observations: The spring vegetables have been growing quickly, and there are not as many insects this year as last year at this time. We're seeing small green strawberries, currants and gooseberries, so we will be looking for some fresh fruit next month.
Challenges: Keeping tomato and pepper seedlings watered and bringing them inside if the weather is too harsh as we harden them off to grow outside by exposing them to sun, wind and temperature variations.
Anticipated next week: Radish harvest and, if the weather is good, we may cheat and plant some of our tomatoes early. We will also harvest the rest of the lettuce to make space for the tomatoes.
