5K run May 12 to benefit Wichita Girls on the Run program

Girls and women of all ages are invited to take part in a fundraiser 5K run Saturday to benefit Girls on the Run of Sedgwick County. The race will start at the Wichita Boathouse, 515 S. Wichita St., at 8:30 a.m.

Christy Thomas, council director, said that organizers are expecting 1,200 to 1,500 runners. Strollers are welcome. The race will take runners from the Boathouse around Lawrence-Dumont Stadium and down Douglas to the WaterWalk area before returning to the Boathouse.

“We have around 80 girls who have been training twice a day for the last 10 weeks for this graduating race,” Thomas said.

Awards will be given to winners in different categories. Participants also can get their hair styled and faces painted during the event.

Money raised will provide scholarships to girls who wish to participate in future Girls on the Run programs.

“We’re an after-school program designed to inspire healthy choices and raise confident young women,” Thomas said. “We have been operating in Sedgwick County for over a year.”

Registration for the race is $30. Participants can register at any city GoRun Wichita or New Balance location until 5 p.m. Thursday. Participants also can register at the event for $40. For more information, call 316-461-4516 or visit http://girlsontherunks.org/.
