Event aims to spread word about elder abuse

Larry Hatteberg of KAKE Channel 10 will host a free event Tuesday at Botanica featuring a senior fair, a balloon launch and a talk by District Attorney Nola Foulston — all to raise awareness of elder abuse.

The sixth annual Elder Abuse Awareness Day will be 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Admission is free, as are refreshments.

People are asked to wear purple to help raise awareness of elder abuse, which includes neglect and various forms of victimization. More than 6,500 older adults in Sedgwick County are said to be victimized each year, with fewer than 400 of the cases reported to authorities.

Foulston will address the need for a community response to protect the elderly from becoming victims.

The Mental Health Association of South Central Kansas, the TRIAD Council of South Central Kansas and the Mid-Kansas Senior Outreach Project are sponsors.
