Surprised Woman Realizes a Sea Otter Is Giving Birth Right Before Her Eyes
Most wildlife lovers dream of spotting a sea otter in the wild, but TikToker KindraStarr had an experience that's on an entirely different level. While watching a sea otter floating peacefully in the water, she noticed the animal was behaving a little strangely. Curious, she started recording, not realizing she was about to capture a once-in-a-lifetime moment.
Watch as the sea otter spins in circles and does somersaults in the water, behaviors that seem playful until Kindra realizes what's actually happening: the mama otter is giving birth. Where Do Sea Otters Give Birth?
Many viewers, including us, had the same reaction as @coffeebreak, who commented, "I just assumed they went onto land to give birth." Another viewer, @Tonia_Ault, was equally amazed, writing, "She did that all by herself in the water!?! So crazy!"
According to SeaWorld, freshwater otters typically give birth in dens on land, while most sea otter births occur in the water. Freshwater otters often have litters of one to three pups, but sea otters usually give birth to just one baby. Multiple births are rare, and SeaWorld notes that only one pup can typically be successfully cared for.
After giving birth, a sea otter mom becomes a full-time caretaker. She carries her pup on her belly, constantly grooms it, and keeps it close at all times. When she dives for food, she'll often wrap the pup in strands of kelp to keep it from drifting away. If danger approaches, she grabs the pup by the loose skin on its neck and dives to safety.
Sea otter pups begin swimming and eating solid foods at around four weeks old and can dive by six weeks, though they remain dependent on their mothers for an average of six months.
