Potential replacements if Todd Akin pulls out of the U.S. Senate race:
Jim Talent: U.S. senator from 2003 to 2007. Served in the House representing a St. Louis-area district from 1993 to 2001. Was Missouri GOP’s 2000 nominee for governor and served in the state House from 1985 to 1993. Is top adviser to GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney. He said Monday he doesn’t want the job.
Jo Ann Emerson: Eight-term member of Congress from Cape Girardeau, first elected to House in 1996. Once worked for American Insurance Association and National Restaurant Association.
Sam Graves: Six-term member of Congress from northwest Missouri, first elected to House in 2000. A farmer and former state senator and state House member.
John Brunner: St. Louis businessman finished second in the Aug. 7 primary to Akin after spending more than $7.5 million of his own money on the race.
Sarah Steelman: Former Missouri state treasurer and state senator finished third in the August primary despite her endorsement from Sarah Palin.
Tom Schweich: Missouri state auditor. Expressed interest in running for the Senate both in 2010 and 2012, but backed away both times.
Ann Wagner: Former Republican state chairwoman and 2nd District congressional nominee.
Brad Lager: Two-term state senator from northwest Missouri who lost primary race for lieutenant governor on Aug. 7.
