Saying "It was an awesome run," sports anchor Will Kunkel announced on Wednesday that he is leaving KWCH-TV, Channel 12.
In statements he posted on Facebook and Twitter, Kunkel said he chose not to re-sign with KWCH once his contract expires on June 10.
"There's some opportunities out there," Kunkel said in a phone interview Wednesday night. "I'm going to stay in broadcasting. This is my dream. This is my passion. This is what God made me to do."
Kunkel joined KWCH in January 2015 after he was sports director at NBC 24 in Toledo, Ohio.
"Thank you to all the local coaches and athletes," Kunkel said in his social media post. "You've been great to cover. It's been my pleasure."
He has loved his time in Wichita, he said.
"That Wichita flag is so awesome," he said. "I'll definitely have to get a Wichita flag" before he leaves.
He also plans to get Shockers, Wildcats and Jayhawks hats, he said. While some viewers may be convinced he didn't like their favorite team, he said, he rooted for all three to succeed.
"When they did well, we did well," Kunkel said.
He has been deeply impressed by how much Wichita has progressed in his more than three years in the city.
Kunkel said he will "let you know when the time is right" what he will do next.
