Screen Scene: ‘Close Encounters,’ Tunes + Tallgrass and Steve Martin (+trailers)
Special events/screenings
▪ “Tunes + Tallgrass” – Wichita Art Museum and Tallgrass Film Association collaborate for the fourth year for this music and movie event held at the museum’s Paula and Barry Downing Amphitheater. Lawrence-based music act Truckstop Honeymoon kicks things off with a performance at 7 p.m. Friday. After that will be a screening of the indie classic “Napoleon Dynamite” at 9 p.m. Admission is free. Blankets and lawn chairs are welcome. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and several food trucks will be on hand offering food for sale. There also will be a cash bar.
▪ Two Wild and Crazy Movies: A Steve Martin Double Feature – The Orpheum Theatre, 200 N. Broadway, presents films starring Steve Martin starting at 7 p.m. Saturday with the 1979 comedy “The Jerk,” about an idiotic man who heads to St. Louis to find himself, and 1983’s “The Man With Two Brains,” about a doctor who experiments with brain transplantation. ▪ “Close Encounters of the Third Kind” – Wichita Big Screen’s 2016 Retro Cinema Series presents screenings of Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi classic about aliens coming to Earth and the people who form a psychic connection to them. The new digital print is said to be spectacular and will be shown at 7 and 10 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Warren Old Town, 353 N. Mead. Tickets are $5.
▪ “Vaxxed: From Cover-up to Catastrophe” – This controversial documentary alleges that the Centers for Disease Control destroyed data on their 2004 study that showed a link between the MMR vaccine and autism. The film is having encore screenings at 5:15 and 7:15 p.m. Monday at the Murdock Theatre, 536 N. Broadway. Tickets are $10.

▪ “Finding Dory” – Everyone’s favorite forgetful blue tang returns (and so does Ellen DeGeneres as her voice) in this sequel to the magical “Finding Nemo.” Here, Dory sets out on a quest to reunite with her loved ones.

▪ “Central Intelligence” – Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart star in this comedy about a mild-mannered accountant who is lured into the world of international espionage.
