The list of street closings for Riverfest is long. The general theme seems to be that if you’re driving downtown, be ready to take alternate routes, especially for the opening ceremony Friday night.

Police advice

Be patient: “People just need to be courteous, have some patience and follow any street signs that someone might approach while driving,” said Lt. James Espinoza, spokesman for the Wichita Police.

Give yourself time: “This is a big event for Wichita and people really need to leave their homes in plenty of time,” Espinoza said. “The city and Riverfest have provided areas for people to park.”

Lt. Joe Schroeder, who is helping coordinate the police support, said the main streets for people to remember are that Douglas will be closed from Main to Waco and Waco will be closed from Douglas to Central.

Respect barricades: “If there’s police cars in the street or a closed sign, don’t go down it,” Schroeder advised. “Don’t drive around barricades: it will get you a citation unless you’re directed to.”
