Review: Doughnut fun to be had in Derby, too

Fancy doughnuts are becoming big business in Wichita, especially with the recent opening of Hurts Donut at 7010 W. 21st St.

But nearby Derby also has a fun and affordable place to get doughnuts and other baked items. From made-by-hand yeast or cake doughnuts, rolls, muffins, cookies, cupcakes and energy shakes, to their many flavors of bottled soda, Derby Donut has something for everyone.

I called and spoke to a friendly male employee before making the trip to Derby. I told him it was going to be our first time there, and he gave me the hours and directions to the store, and said there were several doughnuts to choose from. Unfortunately, he wasn’t there when we arrived, and the employee on duty wasn’t as helpful.

We decided to order a dozen doughnuts to get a good sampling. We tried lemon, maple bacon, blueberry, red velvet, powdered sugar, chocolate chocolate, cherry, vanilla iced with Cocoa Krispies, cherry iced with Cocoa Krispies, vanilla with nuts, and raised chocolate with chocolate icing.

We all agreed that the fruit-flavored donuts (lemon, blueberry and cherry) had the most flavor and were our favorites. The red velvet was a little chewy, and the powdered sugar was our least favorite since it tasted dry. The chocolate chocolate doughnut was a decadent treat, and the icing almost tasted like fudge.

With seating for more than 40 people and low prices, Derby Donut might be worth adding to your agenda next time you find yourself in Derby.
