What a difference a graduation makes.
Today, Wichita’s two Planet Sub locations will begin serving the Ron Baker, a sandwich named for the famous Wichita State University basketball player, who last week agreed to a partially guaranteed one-year deal with the New York Knicks. Actually, the restaurant is temporarily renaming one of its current sandwiches – The Superhero – for Baker, and they’re donating $1 from each purchase of the sandwich to the Urban Prepatory Academy of Wichita.
Thanks to Baker’s graduation from WSU, which frees him from NCAA rules prohibiting the use of a student athlete’s name or picture to promote a commercial product, Planet Sub is not running in to the same problems local food truck B.S. Sandwich Press had in March 2015, when it tried to call a burger on its menu the Evan Almighty Wessel Burger and were promptly ordered by the NCAA to cease and desist.
A Ron Baker sub was actually Baker’s idea, said Pete Keene, the director of operations for Wichita’s two Planet Sub locations. A fan of the Planet Sub, Baker asked if he could do some advertising with them, Keene said. Baker also chose the charity.

“And him being picked up by the Knicks gives it a little extra umph,” Keene said.
The Ron Baker, which features salami, pepperoni, spicy capicola, provolone, red onions, lettuce, banana peppers, oregano and oil and vinegar, will remain The Ron Baker and the charity aspect will continue at least through the end of August, Keene said.
Wichita’s Planet Subs are at 3526 N. Rock Road and 10330 W. Central.
