A longtime downtown Mexican restaurant has closed.

The tiny Angela’s Cafe at 901 E. Central, which originally opened in 1981, quietly closed a few weeks ago. All signs are removed from the building, which sits west of the corner of Central and Washington.

An employee at the Angela’s at 300 S. Greenwich said that Maria Romero lost her lease on the space because the owner wants to turn it into something else. She plans to take a “long vacation” and then will re-evaluate her restaurant future.

A post on the restaurant’s Facebook page read, “We would like to thank all of our customers for keeping our family business strong for 35 years! We greatly appreciate all of your loyalty. We have been honored and blessed to have served you and got to known you! God bless!!! From Maria and Family.”

At one time, there were as many as five Angela’s in Wichita. The two remaining have loose ties to the original family: Angela's Cafe & Cantina #2 at 300 S. Greenwich and Angela’s Cafe and Cantina at 2119 W. 21st St.
