Wichita has two new Mexican restaurants, and each one has unique offerings on its menu.
El Molcajete Mexican Food recently opened at 1712 E. 47th St. S., in the space that formerly held Burritos El Mexicano. The restaurant is owned by Odalis Soza and her aunt and uncle, Oscar and Doris Soza. The three had always dreamed of owing a business together, Odalis said.
It serves a long list of Mexican favorites, including tacos, shrimp cocktail, enchiladas and fajitas. What it doesn’t serve is molcajetes, the classic Mexican dish the restaurant is named for. A molcajete is a stone dish in which various meats and veggies are served in a rich sauce, piping hot. The Sozas don’t have that but plan to go to Mexico to price the molcajete dishes.
They also serve Salvadoran pupusas, but only on Fridays and Saturdays. El Molcajete is open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays but is closed on Sundays. For more information, call 316-765-7392.
Another recent addition is La Burger, which opened a couple of months ago at 1425 E. Central.
It’s owned by Gabriel and Kara Fernandez and specializes in Mexican-style charcoal-grilled hamburgers. The burgers are made with 95 percent Black Angus beef, Gabriel Fernandez said, and they’re topped with items like grilled onions, bacon, cheese, avocado and more.
It also has a full menu of Mexican specialties, like tostadas, tacos, taquitos and gorditas, and starting on Monday, it will also serve breakfast items, including breakfast burritos, breakfast sandwiches, omelets and biscuits and gravy.
Until Monday, hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays. Starting on Monday, when the restaurant adds breakfast, hours will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.
