One of Wichita’s most experienced restaurateurs is getting back in the game – and giving life to a long-abandoned restaurant building in the process.

Kassem Yassine, whose restaurant resume includes Marbella Cafe, LeMonde Cafe, Old Town Martini and College Hill Deli and Catering, plans to open Delano Diner in the old Braum’s building at 1220 W. Douglas, near Douglas and Seneca. It’s been vacant since 2009, when Braum’s moved to 201 S. Seneca.

He’s taking his time with the restaurant to make sure he does it right, he said, and he anticipates he won’t open until late summer or early fall.

Yassine, who can frequently be seen working outside the restaurant, said he took a break from the restaurant industry after opening College Hill Deli and Catering with his brother, Ali Yassine.

I’ve had a peek inside, and Yassine has transformed the interior with lots of stone work. This week, he painted part of the exterior blue.

He plans to serve breakfast and lunch and may eventually add dinner.

I’ll provide updates as Yassine makes progress.
