Smoothie King’s opening day inspires a Wichita Eagle field trip (+video)

Today’s the day. The Smoothie King at Union Station, 711 E. Douglas, has opened, the first eatery to open in the new development right next door to the Wichita Eagle.

My editor, Ardua Harris, was the shop’s very first customer this morning and got a goodie bag filled with coupons, a Smoothie King tattoo and a Smoothie King water bottle. Of course, when the rest of the Wichita Eagle Couch Potatoes, my informal group of co-worker/food reviewers heard about this, they were ready for a field trip. I joined Annie Calovich, Oliver Morrison, Julie Mah and Gabriella Dunn, and we were the store’s second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth customers.

We each tried a different smoothie and were pleased, especially because mediums (and they are giant at 32 ounces) are $5 on Mondays. Mine was a vegan chocolate banana mixture and I had to force myself to put it away in the freezer before I finished it all.

The new Smoothie King is open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays. It also has a drive-through.

The store is passing out goodie bags today until they’re gone.
