A new juice bar – that in a few weeks will be a juice bar in the more literal sense of the word – opened on Thursday.

BottleOpener, a project by local engineer Van Hoang and a few of her engineer friends, is having a soft opening at 7777 E. 21st St. N. A soft opening is when a new business starts out slowly, giving employees a chance to learn their jobs.

The new shop is next to Jimmy’s Egg in the Tallgrass Centre shopping area at 21st and Rock, the same center that has Best Buy, HuHot and the new Bricktown Brewery. BottleOpener faces 21st Street.

It has a long list of juices that cost $5.45 for a 12 ounce and $6.75 for a 16 oz. Examples include the At the Moment juice, made with lemon, apple and red bell pepper, and the Hangover Heaven, made with apple, mint and ginger. Once BottleOpener gets its liquor license, which Hoang thinks will be in the third week of November, visitors can pay an extra $2.50 to $3 to have a shot of alcohol added to their juice.

The menu also includes shakes made with fruits and vanilla, almond or coconut milk, and customers also can get various coffee and tea drinks, from the famous Vietnamese cafe sua to a Nepali chai.

There’s also a selection of sandwiches, though most will be stuffed with fruits and vegetables only. The lone exception, Hoang said, is a tuna sandwich.

The tiny interior has is decorated with impressive artwork, tables and chairs crafted by local artist Nam Le. A particularly eye-catching lighted sculpture decorates the shop’s east wall.

BottleOpener is open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. For more information, call 316-749-8999.
