A new restaurant set to open on Friday near 13th and Grove will deliver chicken and waffles, burgers, sandwiches, catfish and more to customers within a 10-mile radius.
K.J.’s On The Go is at 2403 E. 13th St., in the space most recently occupied by East 13th Street Carry Out. The business is owned by Kimberly Berger and three partners: Fontaine Williams, Heather Nolan and Laquisha Hollis. But it was founded by Berger, who for two years has been running a to-go food business out of her home, delivering dinners and lunches to several large clients. Berger also worked as the manager of Auntie Mae’s, the breakfast restaurant at 9129 W. Central, until it closed in July.
Berger named her business after a quadriplegic man named Karl Jenkins, whom she cared for in his home for 12 years. He died in 2008. She cooked for him, and he loved her food.
“He’s the one who gave me the idea,” Berger said. “He said, ‘Maybe you should take this to another level.’”
Her partner noticed the vacant restaurant space, and they decided to buy it. On Friday, the owners will celebrate the grand opening with music, prizes and giveaways.
Berger said her specialty is fried catfish and people also love her breakfast bowl made with potatoes, ham, sausage, bacon, mushrooms, red peppers, cheese, eggs and basil. She also serves salads, chicken drummies and more.
K.J.’s will also serve dine-in and carry-out customers. It will charge a $5 delivery fee, and Berger said she’d be willing to deliver farther for big orders.
Starting on Friday, the hours will be 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays. Deliver starts at 11 a.m. each day.
The restaurant’s full menu is posted on its Facebook page. For more information, call 316-977-7144.
