Big pile of rusty shipping containers on Central will soon be a tasty, hip hangout
People who frequent the Central and Hillside area in Wichita have been wondering about the giant pile of rusty shipping containers arranged in a lot at the corner of Central and Volutsia.
They're all stacked on top of each other at different angles, and several now have footers on them, indicating they're permanent. A Farha Construction sign is posted out front, and construction equipment is everywhere.
Though it doesn't look like much now, when the project is eventually finished, the shipping containers will be part of an unusual development called Revolutsia. (Notice how the development's name includes the street it's on, Volustia?)
Wichita's Bokeh Development told the Eagle last year about its plans for the spot, and a video showing what it will eventually look like has been posted on Shelden Architecture's website. Additionally, a few local restaurant owners already are planning to open businesses in the space, though none are ready to talk details yet.
Last summer, Bokeh's Michael Ramsey described the space as an outdoor food court. It looks like it will incorporate the stone building at 2721 E. Central that previously held Delice Larae Beauty Salon. (The space is currently listed for lease on loopnet.com.)
Shipping container shopping areas are popular in big cities across the country. I visited a colorful one in Albuquerque, N.M., a few years ago called Green Jeans Farmerythat had restaurants, retail stores and lots of outdoor seating.
Stay tuned for more updates as the shipping containers continue to shift.
