In early October, Jack’s Coffee Shop – a rundown but beloved Wichita burger restaurant at 6154 S. Hydraulic – lost its cook to health problems and suddenly closed.

Wichita burger fans were distraught.

A week later, though, the owner found a fill-in cook and reopened Jack’s.

Wichita burger fans were overjoyed.

Now, Jack’s is closed again and has been for about a month. But its owner, Shirley Coleman, said it should reopen, possibly by next week.

The trouble, she said, came after a gas leak, which shut the restaurant down. Inspectors have yet to clear it to reopen. Coleman said she desperately needs to get Jack’s going again to resume her cash flow and help her afford needed medical supplies.

She asked me to call her Monday for an update, which I will do.

Jack’s is a beyond no-frills spot that serves oval-shaped burgers (but no coffee), and has long been a favorite of local burger aficionados in-the-know. It’s known for its simple menu – burgers, chips and “Coke” – and the interior is as rough as the exterior. But people love the well-seasoned, unusually shaped cheeseburgers. Jack’s tops favorite lists of many of Wichita’s most experienced burger eaters.

Stay tuned for updates.
