UPDATE: Marchello’s was not able to open on Monday after all because of a last-minute oven problem. Employees say they aren’t sure when it will open but it should be later this week. Check back on this post for updates.

West-siders: It’s Manicotti Monday.

Today is opening day for Wichita’s second location of Marchello’s, a restaurant that’s operated at 3107 S. Seneca for more than 20 years. The new restaurant is at Northwest Center at 13th and Tyler where pizza buffet restaurants Uncle Joe’s and Talliano’s once operated. The address is 8404 W. 13th St.

The restaurant, owned by Mikaeil “Mickey” Afsharpour, serves the type of Italian cuisine I like to call “WichItalian” because our city loves it and also eats it at Angelo’s and DeFazio’s. It’s hand-made pizzas, lasagnas baked until bubbling in oval metal dishes, and Italian salads with a bright orange, perfectly oily dressing.

The new Marchello’s will have the same menu as the original (see the full menu here) and will keep the same hours: 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and noon to 8 p.m. Sundays.

The new Marchello’s also has its liquor license, so you can enjoy a Chianti with your pasta.

If you’re planning to try Marchello’s for the first time, my favorite dishes are the meat lasagna and the chicken and smoked bacon pizza, which comes on a nice chewy crust. Here’s a review that Wichita Eagle Dining Panelist Philip Warren wrote a few years ago.
