Restaurant News & Reviews

Three bites of restaurant news

1. Hana Cafe expanding: The popular restaurant in Old Town Square plans to double in size, taking over the space next door, and adding a sushi and sake bar. Remodeling will take about two months to complete and will begin in August.

2. Orange Leaf frozen yogurt opening: A new frozen yogurt shop is slated to open in July in the retail center at 21st and Tyler, in front of the Warren Theatre. The store will be self-service — people dispense and top their own bowls of frozen yogurt then weigh them at the cash register to determine the price.

3. Pho Hot closing: The original Pho Hot at 2409 E. Pawnee is closing, probably in the next couple of months. Pho Hot Bistro at 306 N. Rock Road will remain open, and owners hope to add a west-side Pho Hot at NewMarket Square, 21st and Maize, in the future.

Taco Bueno restaurants are offering half-price drinks, including smoothies, from 2 to 4 p.m. daily. Taco Bueno has stores in Wichita at 427 N. Hillside, 333 S. West St. and 3530 N. Rock Road.

Summer treats at Panera

Panera has updated its menu for the season by adding three hot-weather appropriate items. The restaurant has returned its strawberry, poppyseed and chicken salad and also has added a tomato, mozzarella and basil salad as well as a frozen strawberry lemonade.

Cook like a chef

Cooking at Bonnie's Place, the cooking school at 9747 E. 21st St., puts on regular classes taught by local chefs, and there are several this month. A class with Chester's Bobby Lane is already sold out, but there's still room in two classes that will be taught by Chef Jeremy Wade, who's cooked in restaurants all over town. The next one is at 6:30 p.m. June 10. The cost is $45, and Wade will share recipes he's deemed perfect for a Father's Day meal, from fresh sweet corn ragout with lobster rangoon to aged beef tenderloin medallions with blue cheese. Wade's teaching another class on June 24. For reservations, call 316-425-5224.
