Now that a certain fast-food chain is selling oatmeal-to-go, there's less temptation to start the morning with a 570-calorie sausage, egg and cheese biscuit. Instead, try:
1. McDonald's fruit and maple brown sugar oatmeal: The chain just introduced this new breakfast item, which is topped with apples, cranberries and raisins and contains 280 calories. It's $1.99.
2. Starbucks' "Perfect Oatmeal": Starbucks serves delicious oatmeal to go that's 140 calories naked, 100 extra calories for a nut medley, 50 extra calories for a packet of brown sugar and 100 extra calories for a serving of dried fruit. All three are not required for breakfast perfection, though. It's $2.45.
3. Panera's strawberry granola parfait: Panera's yogurt-y treat, made with vanilla, granola and fresh strawberries, is delicious and will set you back 310 calories (as opposed to 490 for a ham and Swiss egg souffle). It's $3.59.
Martinis and microphones at Mike's
Mike's Wine Dive is the place to be on Thursday nights for people who like martinis and microphones. The bar/restaurant has just started a new $5 martini menu that's available on Thursday nights and features 20 different concoctions. Also, Mike's is hosting karaoke starting at 10 p.m. on Thursday nights. Mike's is at 4714 E. Douglas. For more information, call 316-613-2772.
Happy birthday, Kanai
Wichita became a much tastier place on Jan. 15, 2010. That's the day Kanai, a sushi restaurant improbably located way out west at 119th and Maple, opened its doors. The restaurant is celebrating through the end of the month with special cocktails and rolls. Customers who visit through Sunday also can register to win one of three $50 gift cards, which will be given away on Tuesday. In other Kanai news: The restaurant usually is closed on Mondays but will open on Valentine's Day from 5 to 10 p.m.
A third place to Playa
Wichita's third Playa Azul opened last week in the space at 8760 W. 21st St. (316-722-2929) recently vacated by Senor Tequila. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sundays through Thursdays and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. The Mexican restaurant has two other Wichita locations — downtown at 111 N. Washington and on the east side at 366 N. Rock Road.
