1. Rock Island BBQ opens Thursday in a space behind Emerson Biggin's at 150 N. Rock Island. For now, hours will be 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
2. When Pigs Fly: Father and son Ronnie and Brian Choy will open their new barbecue restaurant, When Pigs Fly, next month at 7011 W. Central in the Crossroads shopping center.
3. Flying Donuts: Tricia Davis is planning a new doughnut shop called Flying Donuts, which she hopes to open in November next to Bella Luna at 4618 E. Central.

Granite City restaurants offer all kinds of money-saving offers throughout the week, including $2 off appetizers from 9 p.m. to close Mondays through Saturdays; free kids' meals from 5 p.m. to close on Tuesdays and Sundays; half-price bottles of wine from 4 p.m. to close Wednesdays; and half-price flatbread pizzas from 4 to 6 p.m. and 9 p.m. to close Mondays through Fridays, from noon to 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. to close Saturdays and from noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.
Jimmy's fifth Egg
Wichita's fifth Jimmy's Egg opened this week at 2315 W. 21st St. (near 21st and Amidon) in the space that most recently housed Clear Lakes Cafe. Jimmy's Egg is a breakfast and lunch spot that already has restaurants at 8728 W. Central, 220 S. West St., 7777 E. 21st St. N. and 7906 E. Harry. One of its specialties is a big ol' pile of food called Jimmy's Garbage Breakfast — a plate of hash browns topped with grilled onions, peppers, sausage, two eggs and a side of toast or biscuits and gravy. Hours will be 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily.
Save the date
The Eagle is trying to start something new and fun for food fans in Wichita, and the working title is On the Town with Carrie and Denise (as in Have You Heard columnist Carrie Rengers and dining reporter Denise Neil.) We envision it as a social meetup of people in Wichita interested in dining. Details are still being worked out, but we've planned the first meetup for 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, at Oeno Wine Bar, 330 N. Mead. The evening will include eating, drinking, mingling and a brief question-and-answer session. Stay tuned for more information.
