Since The Wichita Eagle revived restaurant reviews in October 2000, only three restaurants have received a perfect four-star rating. And they are:
1. Redrock Canyon Grill, 1844 N. Rock Road: When it first opened back in 2001, Redrock received the first four-star rating. Then-critic Ling Low raved about the zesty rotisserie chicken, the sumptuous wood-grilled beef tenderloin and the gorgeous, dimly lighted interior with Southwestern touches.
2. Chester's Chophouse, 1550 N. Webb Road: Though it's an expensive, special-occasion kind of place, we could not resist giving the decadent Chester's Chophouse — with its delicious steaks, gourmet sides and brilliant chefs — four stars. That review was published in 2005.
3. Kanai, 12111 Maple: Kanai (reviewed today) is setting the bar for sushi in Wichita. Who woulda thought it would happen on the west side?
Uptown Bistro is putting on a "Simply Tuscan" four-course wine dinner starting at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Among the courses, each of which will be paired with a wine, are a cioppino seafood stew, a sage gnocchi with pork sausage and tomatoes, and slow roasted beef stuffed with prosciutto and roasted tomatoes. Tickets are $45 a person plus tax and a 20 percent gratuity. Credit card reservations are required by calling 316-262-3232.
Da Louisiana Chicken and Waffle House at 1412 E. Ninth St. has just opened a second location, cleverly called Da Louisiana Chicken and Waffle House #2. The new restaurant, at 1555 Bluffview, serves the same chicken-n-waffle specialties as the original but has room for dine-in customers. It's open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays. For more information, call 316-871-2300.
