River City's customer appreciation

River City Brewery, the Old Town restaurant that's operated at 150 N. Mosley for 17 years, is throwing its annual Customer Appreciation Party from 11 a.m. until 2 a.m. on Saturday. Among the many ways it will show its appreciation:

1. Food and drink specials: River City will expand its pizza menu from eight varieties to 15 and will offer each one for $5 all day Saturday. It'll also offer 10 beers on tap and will sell them for $1.75 rather than the usual $3.50. And

Bulleit Bourbon drinks will be on special for $3.

2. Live music: Live music starts at noon with an acoustic musician downstairs. Later, two bands will perform upstairs at Loft 150.

3. Wacky bar games: River City will offer party attendees a chance to compete in a bizarre bar game — goldfish races (goldfish provided).

Italian for west-siders

West Wichita has a new Italian restaurant. Bella Vita Bistro opened Monday in the space at 120 N. West St. that formerly housed Kebab House. It's open only for dinner now — from 4:30 to 10 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays — though owners hope to add lunch hours in the next three to four weeks. Among the items on the menu customers are raving about, said owner Lory Wooley, are the lasagna al forno, made with sliced prosciutto and porcini mushrooms, layered with meat sauce and topped with a cheesy bechamel sauce. The desserts, which are made on site, also are popular, Wooley said, and include chocolate fondue and a tiramisu-flavored creme brulee. For more information, call 316-941-4500.

The latest super buffet

Top's China Buffet opened Tuesday at 3320 N. Rock Road, in the space most recently occupied by Monterey Mexican restaurant. The restaurant offers the standard huge array of Chinese dishes, plus sushi and more. It's open from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. daily, and the buffet is $6.50 at lunch and $9.99 at dinner, with price breaks for kids and seniors. For more information, call 316-634-1341.

Dearly departed

Wichita is less two restaurants this week. Cafe Cork & Canape at 6105 E 13th St. closed at the end of February, and Firkin & Bull at 2441 N. Maize Road in NewMarket Square closed last weekend.
