More eats on the way

The roster of restaurants scheduled to open in Wichita this year covers a wide spectrum — from a vegetarian eatery to a burger joint famous for fries so greasy, their goodness soaks through the paper bags they're served in.

Following is a list of many of the restaurants Wichita will gain as 2010 progresses.

* Kanai, 12112 Maple o

Opening date: Tentatively Jan. 20

West Wichita doesn't have an upscale, sit-down sushi place — but it will in a couple of weeks. Penny, Chris and Curtis Ellis are opening Kanai, a restaurant intended to showcase the sushi skills of chef David Kanai (of Sumo and Tokyo fame). The restaurant will serve fresh-made sushi and other traditional Japanese cuisine and will have a full bar.

It'll be open from 5 to 10 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundays and from 5 to 11 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

* D'Sozo, 1812 S. Seneca

Opening date: Jan. 25

The restaurant formerly know as Sprouts (owners had to change the name after finding out it was already taken) will feature a vegan cafe selling breakfast and lunch. Half of the large space, though, will be dedicated to a health-food market, selling bulk cereals and nuts, fresh-baked breads and more. Owner Larry Cook says the cafe also will feature a fresh smoothie bar.

* Wasabi Japanese Restaurant, 912 E. Douglas

Opening: End of January/ early February

The new sushi restaurant is almost finished and should open soon, owners say.

* Paradise Donuts, 3107 W. Central, 316-945-2933

Opening date: Early February

Wichita's newest doughnut shop will sell not only cake and raised doughnuts but also breakfast items such as biscuits and gravy, breakfast wraps, cookies and muffins. It'll be open 5:30 a.m. to noon daily.

* Cinnamon's Deli, 29th and Maize

Opening date: Early February

The new west-side Cinnamon's Deli will be ready to go in three to four weeks, managers say. It'll be in the same retail center in front of Lowe's on North Maize Road that also will house Five Guys Burgers & Fries and a new Long John Silver's.

* Top China Buffet, 3320 N. Rock Road

Opening date: February

The building vacated by Monterrey (and Red Hot & Blue before that) will soon be home to a new Chinese super buffet restaurant, owned by Jimmy Wu and his sister, Xiuzhen. Wu also owns New China Buffet at 4858 S. Broadway and New China, which does not have a buffet, at 1860 S. Hillside.

* Long John Silver's, 29th and Maize

Opening date: Feb. 10

A new Long John Silver's will open in the same retail center in front of Lowe's on North Maize Road that also will house Five Guys Burgers & Fries and a new Cinnamon's Deli.

* Five Guys Burgers and Fries, 2610 N. Maize Road

Opening date: March or sooner

The greasy burger joint that Overland Parkers love so dearly will open a Wichita location out west soon. (Officials in the corporate office could say only "March or sooner.") The franchisees plan several more locations in the area, too. The restaurant's menu is pretty straightforward — burgers, dogs and fries. Read more about it at www.fiveguys.com.

* Mike's Wine Dive, 4714 E. Douglas

Opening date: Spring

Businessman Whitney VinZant plans to open a restaurant in the former Caffe Posto spot but will expand it to include the former Hair Connection space next door as will. He described the place as a neighborhood restaurant.

* Bossa Grill, 3242 N. Rock Road

Opening date: Spring

Think Pei Wei but with Brazilian food. Owner Alberto Moreira hopes his Bossa Grill will be the first of a franchise. The menu will rely on chicken and fish, and entrees will be light, healthy and ready quickly.

* Yet-to-be-named bistro, 7718 E. 37th St. North

Opening date: Late spring

Brothers Bryan and Keith Shapiro originally planned to open a sushi restaurant at Sienna Plaza. Now, they're planning a neighborhood bistro for the space that formerly (and briefly) held Amici.
