New this week
▪ “Baywatch” – The unintentionally funny and jiggly TV show about overly buff lifeguards gets updated for the big screen with (hopefully) intentional laughs, as Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron flex their way across the beach to uncover a criminal mastermind’s drug trafficking operation. Series stars David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson make appearances.
▪ “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” – The fifth film in the series has Johnny Depp returning as Capt. Jack Sparrow, who is being hunted by Capt. Armando Salazar (Javier Bardem). So Jack goes in search of the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artifact that wields great power. Kaya Scodelario and Brenton Thwaites are new to the franchise, joining returning stars Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley.
▪ “Wayne’s World” – The Orpheum’s Classic Film Series presents this 25th anniversary screening of the comedy that was launched from a skit on “Saturday Night Live.” Mike Myers stars as Wayne Campbell and Dana Carvey is Garth Algar, hosts of public-access television cable TV show “Wayne’s World.” The film will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Orpheum, 200 N. Broadway. Tickets are $5. Lamphouse Photo Co. will be on site when the doors open at 6 p.m.
