Best bets opening Friday
“John Wick: Chapter 2” – The surprisingly good original was a welcome return for Keanu Reeves, who played an ex-hitman who came out of retirement when thugs stole his car and killed his puppy (hey, even hitmen have hearts). This time, he’s lured out of retirement (again) to seize control of a mysterious assassins’ guild.
“The Lego Batman Movie” – Eventually, they’re just going to make a Lego movie out of everything (I can’t wait for “Lego Gone with the Wind”), as Batman squares off (get it?) with the Joker in a Lego Gotham City.
Also new this week
“Fifty Shades Darker” – The next installment in the kinkfest that is based on the ridiculously popular novels finds a reunion between Christian (Jamie Dornan) and Ana (Dakota Johnson) threatened. Whatever will they do? (Or not do, perhaps).
“Bram Stoker’s Dracula” – It’s the 25th anniversary screening for this version of the classic tale starring Gary Oldman as the count with the sharp chops. Showing at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Orpheum Theatre, 200 N. Broadway. Tickets are $5, $4 students/seniors/military.
These first-run films are ending soon:
“Fences” – Oscar-nominated family drama starring Denzel Washington.
“Patriot’s Day” – Account of the Boston marathon bombings.
“The Space Between Us” – Boy born on Mars wants to find his dad on Earth.
