Just because Valentine’s Day falls on an awkward Wednesday this year doesn’t mean you can’t properly celebrate.
In an interesting twist, Valentine’s Day happens to coincide with Ash Wednesday this year – so many Christians will likely be fasting for the day, making snacking on chocolates a trickier proposition.
Regardless, there are still some ways you can entertain your special someone on Valentine’s Day in Wichita.
I’m leaving the creative planning up to you, but I’ve compiled a list of events going on that day to aid your planning process.
This list won’t include special Valentine’s Day dinners, as my colleague Denise Neil has compiled a comprehensive listing on that topic.
Here are some of the best Valentine’s Day events planned in Wichita this year. All events are on Wednesday, Feb. 14:
Valentine’s Evening Show at Roxy’s Downtown
7:30 p.m., Roxy’s Downtown, 412 E. Douglas
If you’re looking for live music with your dinner on Valentine’s Day, this may be the place for you. The Cherokee Maidens and Sycamore Swing are putting on a show highlighting their signature Western sound at Roxy’s Downtown. Doors open at 6 p.m. and dinner service begins at 6:30 p.m. Their most recent album, “My Dixie Darling,” was nominated for three Academy of Western Artists’ Awards, including Best Group, Best Album and Best Song for the original composition, “Longing for Tulsa and You.”
‘Love Letters’ at Wichita Community Theatre
8-10 p.m., Wichita Community Theatre, 258 N. Fountain
If you and your special someone enjoy live theatre, this may be the event for you. The Wichita Community Theatre is putting on a one-night-only fundraising event wherein it’s staging a production of “Love Letters,” by A.R. Gurney. The play was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Admission is on a donation basis, and includes wine, coffee and dessert.
Couples Night Painting at Pinot’s Palette
7-9 p.m., Pinot’s Palette, 338 N. Mead
To participate in this Couples Night painting class, people have to put their phones in a “cell phone sleeping bag.” The goal of the event, according to Pinot’s Palette, is to encourage couples to connect with each other and not their phones. Plus, you can sip on wine and make a painting that you’ll take home later that evening as a souvenir of a Valentine’s Day well-spent.
Adults Night Out at Color Me Mine
7-9 p.m., Color Me Mine, 2441 N. Maize, Ste. 215
This west-side art studio is hosting a couples painting night during which you and a special friend can create a custom mug set. The signup fee includes two heart-lock mugs, two studio fees, instruction, pottery glazing and firing. Each couple paints their own unique mugs, then gets to take them home at the end of the night.
Valentine’s Day Yoga and Chocolate
5:30-6:30 p.m., Limitless Yoga Studio, 357 S. Pattie
Wanting to get a good yoga session in after the work day is over on Wednesday? Limitless Yoga Studio can help with that. The studio is offering a Valentine’s Day-themed hot yoga session, which will be followed by treats from Sugar Coated Bakery. The class costs $10 to drop in. Attendees can bring their own yoga mats or borrow some from the studio.
Valentine’s Day Celebration at Mort’s
7 p.m.-2 a.m., Mort’s Martini Bar, 923 E. 1st Street
Now for the bar parties. If you’re looking to take your loved one out to a bar on Valentine’s Day, Mort’s is planning a celebration with live music on the patio. There will be specialty cocktails served, and Sunshine the Bunny will perform from 8 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
‘Be My Valentine’ at Dockum
6 p.m.-midnight, Dockum, 104 S. Broadway (inside the Ambassador Hotel)
If you’re looking for a high-end bar to take your date to, try Dockum. It’s the new speakeasy inside the Ambassador Hotel downtown, and it promises an intimate environment on Valentine’s Day. There will be champagne cocktails and live music from The Steinbergs. Reservations recommended.
Sweet Valentine’s Party
7 p.m.-2 a.m., Keys Dueling Piano Bar, 216 N. Washington
This new dueling-piano bar in Old Town is hosting a Valentine’s Day-themed party on Wednesday. For a $100 reservation per couple, you are guaranteed seats, dinner and a sweet time. Visit www.keyswichita.com to make reservations.

Emo Night: Taking Back Wednesday
9 p.m., Barleycorn’s, 608 E. Douglas
So this isn’t really a Valentine’s Day event, per se, but maybe your Valentine has a thing for emo music? Regardless, Barleycorn’s is hosting this weekly concert again this week. If you’re wanting to hear some throwbacks while enjoying yourselves at Barleycorn’s, be sure to check it out.
Love and Laughs Comedy Show
7 p.m.-2 a.m., Steel Bar, 221 N. St. Francis
If you’re looking for a bit of comedy this Valentine’s Day, check out Steel Bar. It will feature comedians Roy Lee, Pooh Hefner and Rev Lowdown, as well as local R&B singer Cray Lashon. Dinner is available for $13 per plate – options include a half-pound smoked brisket or a half-pound smoked chicken, as well as two sides. The show is produced by Creative Grown Music LLC. 21+.
$30 general admission, $200 VIP tables. Reservations may be made at 620-931-9628.
