The new season for Wichita Grand Opera opens Saturday with "My Ukraine!," an evening of colorful Cossack-style folk dance and music by the Ukrainian National Dance Company.
Here are the details:
1) Famous for their brightly colored costumes, high spirited hijinks and athletic precision, the 80 dancers and musicians in the ensemble mix folkloric humor and dance with emotion and poignancy.
2) The night's performance will be in two acts. Act one opens with " Ukraine, My Ukraine!" , a greeting dance, and is followed by "Povzunets," a light-hearted jaunt that demonstrates the skills of the performers with impressive tricks and technical mastery.

3) Act Two will include " The Carpathians," which describes the various regions of Carpathia through costumes, songs and dances. It has three parts: a song of the mountains, a song of the water, and a song of the sun. The second act concludes with "Hopping Dance," with almost every dance step being accompanied by a "Hop" exclamation. The dance has numerous bravura solo performances and intricate choreography.
