Family-friendly activities in the park

Saturday is great day to check out some area parks for family-friendly activities. Here are three ideas.

At O.J. Watson Park, 3022 S. McLean, it’s O.K. Kids’ Day. Kids can enjoy fishing and water-safety clinics, archery, kayaks, train rides, crafts and more. The free event for families with kids ages 5-12 takes place 9 a.m.-noon. Free hotdogs and T-shirts while supplies last. At noon, paid concessions start, along with (for a fee) miniature golf, pony rides and pedal boats. More information: wichita.gov/parkandrec
Derby Kite Festival
Over in Derby, the family-friendly fun continues at the Kite Festival in High Park, 2801 E. James. From 1 to 4 p.m., there will be megakites and demos, kite-making, a candy drop (2:30 p.m.), remote-controlled airplanes and helicopters, face painting, clowns, food trucks, kite vendors and more. Kids to Parks Day in Haysville
Kids can have a fun morning full of activities including bocce ball, pony rides, a scavenger hunt, basketball and jump rope at Kids to Parks Day at Plagens-Carpenter Sports Complex at Plagens Park, 6501 S.
