Summer may just be winding down, but it’s time to start thinking about the holidays — at least when it comes to food — with the annual Wichita Eagle Holiday Cookbook contest.
This year’s contest promises to get you out of those celebration doldrums and make your get-togethers, parties and family dinners hum with sparkling, creative recipes that will wow.
The categories in the contest this year are:
• Secret Ingredient: Maple Syrup: Think of maple syrup as brown sugar on steroids. Real maple syrup is an amazing addition to almost anything. Add it to your favorite beans — baked or not — for that extra something, drizzle it on a cheesecake or add it to a warm drink.
•The Gift of Food:
This category is for busy people who liken food to love. We’re looking for edible gift-appropriate homemade items such as jams or jellies, salsas, condiments, limoncellos, etc. — or the beginnings of great homemade muffins that cooks can assemble in minutes.
•Appetizers in a Hurry:
Recipes using puff pastry, phyllo dough, prepared pie crust or any type of refrigerated bread, biscuits or crescent rolls.
•Soups, Salads and Sides
•Seven-Ingredient Main Courses:
Time is precious, but many people still prefer a homemade meal above something pre-prepared. It’s not always easy when the ingredient list is longer than a table of contents. Pare your favorite recipes down to the essential ingredients and use spices and herbs to bring out the flavor. Share with us your favorite original entree recipe using seven ingredients or less.
How it works
Once we’ve selected the top recipes in each category, a panel of judges will choose the winners. Those top three — plus other qualifying recipes — will be printed in the 57th edition of The Wichita Eagle Holiday Cookbook in November.
Recipes will be tested and judged on taste, appearance, clarity of cooking directions and the creative factor. First-, second- and third-place winners in each category will receive a prize. First-place winners in each category will receive a gift certificate valued at $100, second place will receive $50 and third place $25.
Recipes must be original or adapted. Those taken directly from a website or book will be disqualified. We’re looking for originality and creativity to make your recipe rise to the top.
