The Wichita Jazz Festival concludes today and Saturday. Here's a roundup of events to check out:
1) Saturday night's headlining concert will feature three noted jazz musicians: flute player Nicole Mitchell, of Chicago; vocalist Kathy Kosins, of Detroit; and bass player Linda Oh, of New York. They'll perform in the CAC Theater in the Rhatigan Student Center on the Wichita State University campus. Tickets are $15.
2) This year's jazz festival is focusing on women in the arts , and women's health and social issues, as well. At 7:30 p.m. today at the Rhatigan Student Center, the guest artists will talk about their experiences as female artists, including whether gender biases intrude into their lives and work. The event is free and open to the public.
3) From 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Mitchell, Oh and Kosins will explore creativity during a free workshop for children and youth at McAdams Park Recreation Center, 1329 E. 13th St. Hands-on activities led by the musicians will involve drawing and musical improvisation.
4) The public is welcome to attend free performances from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. today by college, high school and middle school jazz bands. The performances will be in the CAC Theater.
