Jay Leno got a warm welcome from viewers with his return to late night on Monday.
"The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" led the 11:35 p.m. Eastern time slot with 6.6 million viewers, beating ABC rival "Nightline," which had 4.1 million viewers, and CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman," which had 3.8 million viewers, according to the Nielsen Co.
Then many of Leno's viewers stuck with NBC, giving "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon "a 2.1 million win against its 12:35 a.m. competitor on CBS, "Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson," which had 1.8 million viewers.
After 17 years, Leno left "Tonight" last May in the hands of former "Late Night" host Conan O'Brien.

O'Brien's early ratings on "Tonight" were strong. But he couldn't hang onto the audience that Leno had typically attracted, leading to his exit in January.
Warwick: Performers deserve pay for airplay
Singer Dionne Warwick said Tuesday it's only fair to make radio stations pay royalties to performers — herself included — when they broadcast music.
Warwick, 69, appeared at a Capitol Hill event to urge Congress to pass legislation to make radio stations pay fees to musicians, similar to those paid to songwriters.
Satellite radio, Internet radio and cable TV music channels already pay fees to performers and musicians, along with songwriter royalties. AM and FM radio stations do not pay royalties to performers, only to songwriters.
It's a boy
"Law & Order" creator and executive producer Dick Wolf's wife, Noelle, has given birth to a boy, Rex Wolf.
Publicist Pam Golum says the baby was born Monday in Los Angeles, weighing 8 pounds, 1 ounce.
The couple have a 2-year-old daughter, Zoe.
Fire delays sentencing
A court spokesman says rap star Lil Wayne's sentencing in a New York City gun case has been postponed because of a courthouse fire.
The rapper had been expected to start a one-year jail term after sentencing Tuesday. He pleaded guilty in October to attempted criminal possession of a weapon.
The 27-year-old rapper entered his plea in October. He admitted having a loaded gun on his tour bus in July 2007.
