Chelsea Clinton engaged to longtime boyfriend

Chelsea Clinton, the 29-year old daughter of former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton , has become engaged to her longtime boyfriend, investment banker Marc Mezvinsky.

The couple sent an e-mail to friends Friday announcing the news. They said they were looking at a possible wedding next summer. Matt McKenna, a spokesman for the former president, confirmed the engagement Monday.

Mezvinsky is a son of former Pennsylvania Rep. Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky and former Iowa Rep. Ed Mezvinsky, longtime friends of the Clintons. Ed Mezvinsky was released from federal prison last year after pleading guilty in 2002 to charges of bank and wire fraud.

The couple became friends as teenagers in Washington, and both attended Stanford University. They now live in New York, where Mezvinsky works at Goldman Sachs and Clinton is attending graduate school at Columbia University's School of Public Health.

Boyle's debut album tops charts in Britain

In the contest, she finished second. But on the charts, she's number one.

Susan Boyle's debut record, "I Dreamed a Dream," entered the British album chart in the top spot Sunday. The 48-year-old Scottish songstress famously finished second on "Britain's Got Talent," but the variety show launched a career that has seen her win success on both sides of the Atlantic.

She's had a glamorous makeover, was photographed by an upscale fashion magazine and was profiled for "NBC's People of the Year" special in the United States.

"I accept now that my life will never be the same. And I don't want it to end," Boyle told Matt Lauer on the special, according to an NBC transcript.

Workers plow road to Polanski's chalet

Workers plowed snow away from Roman Polanski's Alpine chalet on Monday, as Swiss authorities worked with the director's lawyers to meet the conditions of his $4.5 million bail and house arrest.

The Swiss Justice Ministry wouldn't say when Polanski would be released from jail. Spokesman Folco Galli said there were still outstanding requirements from last week's court decision that granted Polanski permission to live in the luxury resort of Gstaad if he wears an electronic monitoring bracelet.
