Chef Paula Deen hams it up for charity

Celebrity chef Paula Deen got an unexpected serving of ham — across her face.

The Food Network star was helping unload 25,000 pounds of donated meat for an Atlanta food bank on Monday when someone threw one of the hams like a football and accidentally smacked her.

Deen tells WGCL-TV: ''I thought it busted my lip, but it didn't.'' Though smiles and laughter, Deen added: ''I'm OK. It just knocked me for a little bit.''

She says she was unloading hams when she tossed one to a man, who then said ''Back at ya.'' Thinking he meant it only as a sentiment, she turned around to get another ham when the errant pork came at her. ''He really meant, 'Back at ya.' " Later, she tweeted: ''I haven't met the ham that could stop me yet!''

Little Richard has hip surgery

Little Richard is asking fans to pray for his speedy recovery after undergoing hip surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

The Rev. Bill Minson, a family friend, said the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer had been in some pain leading up to the surgery but continued to maintain a rigorous performing schedule.

Minson said the 76-year-old asked him to tell fans ''to get ready to rock 'n' roll with him in the new year because he's coming back strong.''

Verdict for police chief in surrogate case

A police chief was convicted of three felonies Monday but was acquitted of burglary charges in an alleged break-in at the home of a woman who carried twin girls for Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick .

A jury found suspended Martins Ferry Chief Barry Carpenter of eastern Ohio guilty of receiving stolen property, theft in office and tampering with evidence. He was acquitted on charges of burglary and unauthorized used of property or services.

' 'The bottom line is that there is a victim in this case whose privacy was so gravely intruded upon,'' Ohio Assistant Attorney General Emily Laube said. ''If you can't trust the police, who can you trust?"

Prosecutors alleged that Carpenter broke into Michelle Ross' home in May, took items related to her pregnancy and the surrogacy, and schemed with Police Chief Chad Dojack of neighboring Bridgeport to sell the items to celebrity photographers.
