Automobilia show shines in Old Town

A sure sign that the car show season is in full swing is ranks of cool cars lining up early on a hot Saturday afternoon in downtown Wichita, waiting for the signal to roll into the annual Automobilia Moonlight Car Show & Street Party.

For the 19th year in a row, that scene played out last weekend as hundreds of hot rods, customs, street cruisers, trucks and motorcycles were slotted, tail-end first, into parking spots throughout Old Town.

The crowd count picked up noticeably once the sun slid behind the taller buildings and the music was cranked up an extra notch or two by the live bands performing in several spots along the streets. There was even an occasional breeze wafting through the show, bringing some appreciated relief.

Each year, an amazing number of newly completed or previously unseen vehicles show up to take part in this event, so there were plenty of photo ops to be had. One of the most popular was Dan Nixon’s 2012 Lamborghini Aventador from Hays. With its scissor doors and engine cover swung open wide, the bright orange Italian machine attracted more than its share of camera-toting showgoers.

We did our best to capture a bit of the ambiance of the show for those who couldn’t make it. And our thanks to Michael Burk, a friend of a friend, who let us hitch a ride on his golf cart, making our photo safari through the blocks-long show a bit easier on us.

We hope you enjoy this photo tour.
