After finally having to destroy the front U-joint to get the driveshaft off the transmission and removing the cross-member, I won the best two-out-of-three match. When the side plate came off, it was clear what the problem was: no trans lube plus no speedometer drive gear = a lump of rust that would not turn if attached to a diesel tractor engine.
