The clock ticked down, and Heights appeared destined for its first girls basketball loss since the 2009-10 season.
For the better part of 24 minutes, Columbia Rock Bridge, the fourth-ranked team in Missouri, had owned the boards and controlled the tempo of the Hy-Vee Shootout game in Kansas City, Mo.
“We were kind of jittery at first,” said Heights coach Kip Pulliam. “We couldn’t get a shot to go in. When you don’t make shots, you can’t put your press in.”
Finally, with the game on the line in the fourth quarter, senior point guard Taylor Chandler turned up the defensive pressure and the Falcons followed.
In the span of five minutes, Heights turned a six-point deficit into a 10-point lead before closing out a 46-39 victory.
Chandler finished with nine points and five steals, while junior Jada Lynch added 12 points and eight rebounds off the bench.
“Coming up here," Pulliam said, "and getting to play a top two or three team in the state of Missouri, it’s great for us. It gets us game-ready for the state tournament.”
